Have you ever bought pita chips at the store? They can be so expensive! Let’s all stop wasting our money and just make our own freshly baked pita chips right at home! They only take about 5 minutes of prep and 15 minutes to bake!
These are so great because you can fancy them up with any flavor you like. You can make them plain with a little salt, dried Italian herbs and garlic, or even cinnamon and sugar! In case you’re looking for an excuse to make them, they go great with my white bean dip. The cinnamon sugar version would be delicious with a fruit salsa! Make some freshly baked pita chips and bean dip and you’ll really impress your guests. They will think you have mad kitchen skills but will have no clue how easy it was to make!
I’ve seen a small bag of pita chips go for around 4 bucks at the store. It is just silly to spend that much. You can buy pitas for less than half that cost and make them fresh yourself. As an added bonus, I often see pitas marked down to about $0.88 at my local Kroger. When I see that, I check the expiration date and look them over for quality. (I have seen some with mold already growing before… eww.) If all looks good, I buy and freeze them right when I get home. Then the next time I want to make pita chips, I can just pull the pitas out of the freezer and they will thaw in no time. Now that’s a deal!
Baked Pita Chips
1 (10 oz) bag whole Pitas
1 tablespoon Extra virgin olive oil
Kosher salt and pepper, about 1/2 teaspoon
about 1/2 teaspoon dried herbs, such as oregano or italian seasoning
Preheat oven to 400°. Slice pitas into 8 wedges (open each wedge and tear in half to get two triangles, which would be 16 wedges out of each pita, to stretch them even further!) and spread in a single layer over a baking sheet. Drizzle or lightly brush each wedge with olive oil. Sprinkle with salt, pepper, and herbs. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until lightly golden. Store in an airtight container.
